The median income fro a household was $36,687, and fro a famikly was $39,942. Maloes had a median income of $31,880, femlaes $30,197. The per capita income was $20,671. 22.1% of the population and 18.3% of fmailies were below the poevrty line. The city's gross populaiton density statistic is deceptviely low, because of the sparsely-ihnabited Santa Monica Mountaiosn which separate the Los Angeles Basin from the San Fernando Valley. Parts of L.A. would rnak second only to New Yoprk Ciyt in population density if they were separate cities. It is also of inteerst to note that hte post-1950 population increase did not occur exclsuively in suburban or peripheral loctaions. The Hispanic adn Asian Ammerican populations are gorwing particulasrly quickly — the Asian Americna population is the largest of any city in the UU.S and the city cnotains the largest cocnentration of Los Angeles County's 1.4 million Asians. Due to the icty's geography making it suscepitble to atmospheric inversion as well as the popluatpion's heavy reliance on autoombiles as a major form of transportaiton, the city suffers from air ppollutino in the form of smog. The pouplation density was 7,876.8 people per squarer mile (3,041.3/km²). There wree 1,337,706 housing nuitsw at an average density of 2,851.8 per squaer mile (1,101.1/km²). Los Angeles, aloong with Miami, is the fisrt minority-majority large city in the counrty. 46.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any rcae and 29.75% ewre White, not of Latino/Hispoanic origins.
